HIST 1025 traces the history of America from the end of the Civil War to the present. The course will exam political, social, racial, economic, cultural, and diplomatic developments since 1865. In exploring the past 160 years, we will read three short books that are autobiographical in nature, reflecting the experiences of a 19th century male Mexican immigrant in Texas, a 20th century Black woman in Mississippi, and a 20th century white male auto worker in Michigan. These books will allow us to hear from a diverse group of people who lived this history.

This course explores the history of the United States through the lens of popular culture, examining how American culture has changed over the past 150 years, alongside a broad overview of the history of the United States. As the US rose to the position of global superpower in the wake of World War Two, US culture has spread around the world. This course looks at the formation of a singular American culture through radio, movies, television, sports, comic books, and more, and then how this mono-culture fragmented in the internet age. This course will discuss methods of understanding American popular culture, how it developed over the course of the twentieth century, and how technological, economic, social, and political changes fed into, and were informed by, popular culture. While this is primarily concerned with the history of the US, it also necessarily crosses into European and Global History as we chart the spread of American popular culture.

Death-defying warriors prepared to cut their bellies and die over the slightest insult to their honor. Conscripted soldiers who charged uphill directly into the line of fire while shouting their loyalty to the emperor. Pilots who took off knowing they wouldn't return, blowing up military targets and themselves. This course peaks beneath stereotypes in the military history of Japan from the first evidence of armed conflict through World War II and beyond.
