Program At a Glance
Year 1
Exploratory Learning
Complete core and elective courses while exploring research groups through lab shadowing or meetings with faculty. This period prepares students for advanced research and qualifying exams. At end of their first semester, students select a research advisor.
Year 2
Comprehensive Exam
Demonstrate readiness for independent research through a comprehensive exam. During this oral exam, students defend their research proposal and connect it to foundational chemistry concepts to advance to Ph.D. candidacy.
Year 3
Original Research
Conduct original research, publish findings, and present work at conferences. This is the core of the Ph.D. experience and a major focus of the later years.
Year 4
Dissertation Writing
Organize and synthesize your research into a cohesive dissertation. Students work closely with your advisor to refine the scientific narrative and prepare for the final defense.
Year 5
Dissertation Defense
Defend your research before a faculty committee and complete final degree requirements. Students will have their dissertation published in the University's ProQuest database.
