Learning Lunch with Austin Okigbo
- Dealing with Indigenous Music(ians) and Copyright in a Globalized World
- Wednesday, April 8, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
- S131
- The mediascape as theorized by Arjun Appadurai in his Modernity at Large (1996), calls for a pause and re-evaluation of what we do as musicians, composers, music video makers, and content creators in the social mediasphere. Thanks to convolution in the global soundscape facilitated especially in the 21st century by the internet highway, one is no longer shielded by the reality of spatial and temporal distances when we copy, quote, or even appropriate materials from a distant past or distant land without appropriate crediting. Although in the past indigenous cultures and artists have been the ones losing to artists and corporations from the global North thanks to the realities of economic and political power imbalance, there is a noticeable reverse in that dynamic again thanks to the mediascape. The question then is how do we as performers, composers, music video makers, and content creators on social media navigate the sphere in its apparent modern complexities? What resources do we have to help us deal with the challenges especially as intellectual property laws become obsolete, revised, or even entangled and imbricated with international laws and conventions?Ìý
