Guiding Principles for Faculty Absence and Work Modality
Guiding Principles for Faculty Absence and Work Modality
These are the principles guiding decisions on faculty absence and faculty work modality.
- Several existing campus policies speak to these topics:
- Boulder Campus Policy on Absence from Campus
- NB: this is primarily a policy about travel
- Work modalities and Schedules (including Faculty Standards of Practice)
- Leaves and Sabbaticals
- Academic Instruction Guidance
- Boulder Campus Policy on Absence from Campus
- Because some of the campus policies above are due for review and/or updating, the guiding principles for A&S articulated in this document draw broadly upon their spirit.
- Overall, the guiding principles that deans and department chairs will adhere to in decision-making related to faculty absence, faculty work modality, and related topics will weigh and balance multiple priorities:
- the length of the request (e.g., special case versus ongoing arrangement);
- the best interests of the individual faculty member, department and students;Ìý
- support for scholarly/creative work, teaching, and service;Ìý
- and equity impacts on other members of the department, including faculty, staff, and students.
- All decisions should have a timeline for reevaluation so that these priorities can be reexamined on a regular basis.
- The guiding principles above apply to all academic units in the college. Deans will apply these principles to guide decision-making within their divisions based on the particularities of each case.
- Policies related to legally mandated and other types of formal leave are separate from the considerations noted here.Ìý
