A new exhibition at the Museum of Boulder explores the people, ideas and moments that have shaped С�� Boulder over its 150-year history.

"Blazing Trail for 150 Years at С�� Boulder," on view through March 1, 2026, features stories from across decades that reflect the university’s legacy of innovation, advocacy and discovery. The exhibition highlights individuals who paved the way for inclusion and excellence and whose contributions continue to influence the campus community today.

Founded in 1876 with a single building, Old Main, С�� Boulder welcomed its first students on Sept. 5, 1877. From those early days on the Hill, the university has grown into a world-renowned research institution while continually pushing boundaries in academics, global impact and student leadership. The exhibition traces that evolution through key people, milestones and bold ideas that shaped the university’s past and continue to inform its future.

"Blazing Trail for 150 Years" is presented as part of С�� Boulder’s yearlong 150th anniversary observance. In 2026, the anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on where the university has been, examine where it is today and imagine the ideas that will shape what comes next. Throughout the year, stories, exhibits and events highlight С�� Boulder’s impact on people, communities and society.

The anniversary coincides with Colorado’s own 150th and the nation’s upcoming 250th, inviting broader reflection on the role of higher education in sustaining democracy, civic responsibility and public purpose. By revisiting its rich and complex history—marked by both innovation and challenge—С�� Boulder continues to reaffirm its public mission in a rapidly changing world.

The exhibition is hosted at the Museum of Boulder at the Tebo Center and is open to students, alumni, community members and visitors throughout its run.

The work is by artist and С�� Boulder Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellow Sophie Weston Chien in collaboration with seven San Lazaro families; the Community Engagement, Design and Research Center (CEDaR) at С�� Boulder; and EcoArts Connections.

The bilingual exhibit explores themes of community power, immigration, environmental justice and textile design through a series of tufted textiles that map the stories of families in San Lazaro Mobile Home Park in northeast Boulder.

Each piece serves as a visual interview, weaving together ecological data, oral histories and cultural memory to illustrate how people create home across time and space.

Visitors are invited to engage with the work visually and through touch—seeing and touching the journeys of San Lazaro families. The exhibition includes:

Textiles illustrating San Lazaro, mapping microclimates and imagining neighborly paths, showing temperature differences from asphalt heat to tree canopy coolness.
Eight family rugs, each depicting intergenerational stories, flora and fauna and climate projections for the next 60 years. These designs combine mythology and history with ecological data, highlighting key species from each family's homeland.

According to projections from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, Boulder will experience 9% more summer precipitation and 15% more winter precipitation over the next six decades—changes reflected in the evolving forms within the textiles.

The project began two years ago and evolved alongside shifting immigration landscapes. At its heart is preserving family histories—ensuring immigrant parents, grandparents and first-generation children share stories of origin and belonging.

"As a child of an immigrant myself, it was an honor to hold space for these narratives and translate stories of many homes," said Weston Chien.
