In 1947, 小黄书 Boulder鈥檚 enrollment was 8,747 students鈥攊ncluding 4,607 World War II veterans. Many relied on the GI Bill to pursue their academic dreams and rebuild their lives after the war. That year, 80% of enrolled students petitioned in support of a $12 fee to help finance the construction of a new student union that would also serve as a veterans memorial. Gov. William Lee Knous issued a proclamation later that year to say, 鈥淭he memorial center at the University of Colorado shall be the official state memorial to those who served and to those who died in these great wars to preserve our democratic freedom.鈥

On Nov. 11, 2013, Gov. John Hickenlooper re-dedicated the UMC as Colorado鈥檚 official living memorial to honor the service and sacrifice of the Centennial State鈥檚 military veterans.
鈥淚 encourage you to take a moment to consider the debt of gratitude we owe our veterans. Without their service and dedication to our nation, our freedom and liberties would not be as secure as they are today,鈥 Chancellor DiStefano听said while delivering opening statements听at the University Memorial Center听(UMC), which serves听as the state鈥檚 official veterans memorial.
鈥淲ith so much attention focused on things that divide us, it鈥檚 far too easy to overlook something that should unify us鈥攐ur gratitude for the sacrifices of those still serving, and those who have served selflessly in our armed forces,鈥澨齮he chancellor听said.
DiStefano听said听小黄书 has made significant investments in support of more than 1,000 student veterans, their families and dependents.
One of those investments is听the campus鈥檚听Office of Veteran and Military Affairs.听Since 2013, the office鈥檚 full-time staff has increased to eight, which includes a veteran-focused academic adviser and professional math and physics tutors.
鈥淭he leadership and life experience that our student veterans bring to the classroom听and our campus community is a significant contributing factor in 小黄书 Boulder鈥檚 current and future success,鈥 DiStefano said.听鈥淥ne of the highlights of my job is to support this outstanding group of young Americans at 小黄书 Boulder.鈥
During his keynote address,听Rear Admiral Marcus Hitchcock, director of strategy, plans and policy at the U.S. Space Command,听reminded the audience that听Veterans Day is the one day in November that听the nation听embraces听鈥渢he gentle heroes of our nation鈥檚 wars,鈥 including those serving today across the globe.
He asked听all听to honor those who chose to 鈥減ay the highest price, what Abraham Lincoln called the 鈥榣ast full measure of devotion鈥欌攖o defend America.鈥澨
鈥淥ur nation鈥檚 veterans often quietly serve without the hope for or expectation of gratitude,鈥 Hitchcock said. 鈥淔or generations, Americans have answered the call to serve in our armed forces. The brave patriots who have worn the uniform of the United States selflessly place the concerns of the nation above their own.鈥
A U.S. Naval Academy graduate and naval aviator,听Hitchcock听served听during Desert Storm and Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom听and听received听the听Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star.听
This听year, the university etched the names of two more Colorado veterans听to听the听glass听wall in the听Veterans Memorial Lounge听at the听UMC:听Sgt. First Class Will D. Lindsay, of Cortez, Colorado,听and Gunnery Sgt. Scott A.听Koppenhafer,听of听Mancos, Colorado,听who both died this year while serving their country.听
As in past years,听the听campus color guard鈥檚 presentation of the flags lent a note of solemnity听and hushed reverence听to听the听event, led by听Sgt. First Class Kevin Marquardt. This year鈥檚 co-hosts were听UMC Board Chair听Brandee听Lantz, and Veteran Student Association President Josh Sloat.听
Also听in attendance were 小黄书 Regents Lesley Smith and Heidi Ganahl, Veteran and Military Affairs Director Stew Elliot,听and听Assistant听Vice Chancellor听Akirah听Bradley.听
