Faculty involved in the project have endeavored to make government workings, issues, debates, and impacts meaningful and memorable to students while maintaining the conceptual coverage and rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from the fundamental principles of institutional design at the founding, to avenues of political participation, to thorough coverage of the political structures that constitute American government. The book builds upon what students have already learned and emphasizes connections between topics as well as between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses, future careers, and as engaged citizens. In order to help students understand the ways that government, society, and individuals interconnect, the revision includes more examples and details regarding the lived experiences of diverse groups and communities within the United States. The authors and reviewers sought to strike a balance between confronting the negative and harmful elements of American government, history, and current events, while demonstrating progress in overcoming them. In doing so, the approach seeks to provide instructors with ample opportunities to open discussions, extend and update concepts, and drive deeper engagement. This is an adaptation of American Government 3e by OpenStax.</span></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Tue, 16 Jun 2026 20:18:19 +0000 Avery Lord 6818 at /polisci Unpacking the policy outcome tendencies of US negotiated water settlements /polisci/2026/06/16/unpacking-policy-outcome-tendencies-us-negotiated-water-settlements <span>Unpacking the policy outcome tendencies of US negotiated water settlements</span> <span><span>Avery Lord</span></span> <span><time datetime="2026-06-16T14:15:41-06:00" title="Tuesday, June 16, 2026 - 14:15">Tue, 06/16/2026 - 14:15</time> </span> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-categories" itemprop="about"> <span class="visually-hidden">Categories:</span> <div class="ucb-article-category-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-folder-open"></i> </div> <a href="/polisci/taxonomy/term/1116"> 2025 </a> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-tags" itemprop="keywords"> <span class="visually-hidden">Tags:</span> <div class="ucb-article-tag-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-tags"></i> </div> <a href="/polisci/taxonomy/term/1172" hreflang="en">Glen Krutz</a> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="ucb-article-text" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><p><a href="https://www.emerald.com/jhpe/article/5/3-4/331/1334506" rel="nofollow">Unpacking the policy outcome tendencies of US negotiated water settlements</a></p><p>By: Glen Krutz</p><p>Abstract:</p><p>Since the 1970s, negotiated settlements have become the popular method for forging agreement on water provision in the American West between Native American Tribal Nations and Federal, state and local actors. Such settlements require a negotiation process between multiple actors and led by the US Department of the Interior, followed by codification into statute by both of houses of Congress and the president. As of late 2024, 35 negotiated water settlements had been completed and implemented in this manner (. Indian Water Rights Settlements, CRS report to Congress. Washington, DC: Library of Congress). In this paper, I plumb the central tendencies of all 35 completed agreements to see which factors inform their usage and how such factors vary across agreements and over time.</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Tue, 16 Jun 2026 20:15:41 +0000 Avery Lord 6817 at /polisci
