Work Hours When School is in Session

International students in F-1 or J-1 status can work on-campus up to 20 hours per week while school is in session during the fall and spring semesters.

  • This 20-hour limit applies to the combined total work hours of all on-campus jobs.
  • Students are responsible for tracking their hours to ensure compliance with this limit.

Work Hours During Summer Break

International students in F-1 and J-1 status can work full-time (more than 20 hours a week) during the summer term. The official student employment summer term does not require anÌýException Request Form to workÌý40 hours a week or 80 in a pay period. Review the Student EmploymentÌýsummer calendar as student employment dates may differ from the academic calendar.

Important Dates for Summer 2026

  • Through 05/02/2026: students in F-1 and J-1 status are limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week (combined total) for all on-campus employment.Ìý
  • From 05/03/2026 to 05/09/2026: students can work up to 25 hours a week without an exception request, but if they want to work more than 25 hours a week, they must complete the Exception Request for Student Employee Work Hours f´Ç°ù³¾.Ìý
  • From 05/10/2026 to 08/15/2026: students in F-1 and J-1 status may work up to 40 hours per week during the official summer break.Ìý
  • Beginning 08/16/2026: The 20-hour-per-week limit resumes, as the fall semester begins within the pay period starting on this date.Ìý

Work Hours During Fall, Winter & Spring Breaks

International students in F-1 and J-1 Status can work on-campus full-time (more than 20 hours) during the official school fall, winter and spring breaksÌýwith approval from the university in certain situations.

Exception Request Conditions for Fall, Winter & Spring Breaks

  • If a student's employing department requests them to work more than 50 hours in a bi-weekly pay period during breaks for business or academic reasons, the student’s supervisor must complete theÌýException Request for Student Employee Work Hours.
  • Approval will not be granted based solely on the student’s desire to work additional hours.
