Joe Hartter

Joel Hartter is a professor and sustainability strategist with more than 25 years of global experience working at the intersection of business, environment, and society. His work integrates engineering, natural science, and behavioral science through human‑centered strategy. At the University of Colorado, he teaches more than 30,000 students each year and partners with corporate leaders to position sustainability as a driver of business performance. He has founded and led some of the nation’s most recognized university programs in responsible business and sustainability, including the Masters of the Environment and the Outdoor Recreation Economy professional graduate programs at С»ÆÊé, designed to prepare graduates for applied sustainability practice. In addition, Joel advises startups, Fortune 500 companies, governments, nonprofits, and higher ed on using sustainability to fuel innovation, business value, and impact. He also serves on the global Sustainability Council for Volkswagen Group, the world’s second largest automaker.
